Porto Vecchio, Corsica ….. a day trip in the Mountains

Categories France/Italy/France 2022..... another Mega Roadtrip

September 8th, 2022

Dare I say it again, another beauty of a day, however today we are seeking to escape the heat and are heading for the hills. The plan is to do a hike in the Aiguilles de Bavella (1218 m) which are rocky spikes of red granite that dominate the massif which connects the Alta Rocca mountains to the east coast of Corsica.

The climb starts almost immediately as we leave Porto Vecchio, not many cars en route, and several cyclists …it is great to see cyclists of all levels on the roads with the drivers being totally respectful!

The drive is super scenic and after an hour and a bit we are at the trailhead…parking is straightforward 4 euros and you can stay as long as you want. The temperature is 21C some 10C degrees lower than at sea level !!

Time to gear up and head out: onwards and upwards ….a super hike of around 2 hours with some truly inspiring views:

…”wildlife ” in the park

We then carried on via a circuitous route back to Port Vecchio passing through several of the almost universally pretty and quaint Alta Rocca villages…unfortunately pictures do not do justice to this area one really needs a drone to give it the scale and depth it deserves!!

Back home shower, some beverages, and a short hike to the old town for more moules..

….and no, on the way back we did not get lost!
